Questions from A Girl With An Adventurous Fork:
What is your biggest fear?
Living in an area where the food has no flavor… oh wait, I’m already there. Next rational fear, losing the last remaining bit of my ability to concentrate on anything for more than five minutes at a time.
What is your biggest accomplishment?
Tough one and something I can’t really answer seriously.
Figuring out how to knit continental style (left hand dominant) was fairly difficult. Only took me 6 years or so.
Who do you look up to?
Jacques Pépin has had an amazing career. Cooked for 3 French presidents. Turned down the job of White House chef for JKF. Ran the corporate kitchen at Howard Johnson’s making quality good tasting food on a large scale. Suffered and recovered from an accident that should have left him crippled for life. And he has been doing the TV chef thing longer and better than anyone else, yet maintains a humble attitude that says he’s not doing it for himself, but doing it to help the viewer be a better cook (*ahem ahem* David Chang and company *ahem*).
What’s your favorite quote?
‘In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism.’
I really miss William Safire. His ‘On Language‘ column for the NY Times was well worth the cost of subscription.
Favorite animal?
If I can be as picky as possible, and why not as this is my make believe world, a really well trained black percheron with a perfect parade trot. It’s such a beautiful sight.
If you can live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Seoul. Pork, kimchee, molten hot spicy soups, really fast internet, good and cheap beauty products. What’s not to love?
Where is your favorite travel destination?
Mexico City is one of the greatest cities I’ve ever been. It’s so big and chaotic, with incredible food, architecture, and culture.
What makes you the happiest?
Being able to have quiet alone time for at least 10 minutes a day. This has become so much harder than it should be.
What is the craziest thing you’ve done?
While I lived in Phoenix, I drove to Magdalena de Kino, about 50 or 60 miles south of the US-Mexico border just to have lunch.
What was the last thing that surprised you?
Just how awful Mexican food is in Saratoga Springs, New York. Really. So awful. How can someone mess up a taco that badly?
What is your favorite food?
Cucumbers. Avocados. Mangos. Red chiles.
